Author: mybad67
Description: NTSB Identification: DEN84FA308. The docket is stored on NTSB microfiche number 25894. Accident occurred Friday, August 10, 1984 in TABERNASH, CO Probable Cause Approval Date: 12/14/1992 Aircraft: CESSNA L-19E, registration: N4584A Injuries: 2 Fatal. THE AIRPLANE DEPARTED GRANDBY 8/10/84 AND FAILED TO ARRIVE AT ITS DESTINATION. ON 8/23/87, IT WAS FOUND ON THE SLOPE OF A HIGH TREE-COVERED RIDGE. VIDEO TAPE RECOVERED FROM THE WRECKAGE PROVIDED A VISUAL AND AUDIO RECORD OF THE FLIGHT FROM TAKEOFF TO IMPACT. COMPARING THE RECORDING TO A TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP, THE FLIGHT WAS SLOWLY CLIMBING BUT ITS ALTITUDE ABOVE THE GROUND WAS DECREASING WHEN IT CRASHED AT THE 10,200-FT LEVEL. DURING THE LAST FEW SECONDS OF THE TAPE, THE TERRAIN DOMINATED THE VIEW THROUGH THE COCKPIT WINDOW. THE PILOT MADE AN APPROXIMATELY 45 to 55-DEG ANGLE BANK TO THE RIGHT, AND THE STALL WARNING HORN COULD BE HEARD 3 TIMES DURING THE APRX. 180 DEG OF TURN. THE AIRPLANE SUBSEQUENTLY STALLED 3 TIMES, SPUN, FLIPPED OVER, AND ENTERED THE TREES. THE DENSITY ALTITUDE WAS JUST ABOVE 13,000 FT.** The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows: IN-FLIGHT PLANNING/DECISION, IMPROPER...PILOT IN COMMAND AIRSPEED...NOT MAINTAINED...PILOT IN COMMANDDENSITY ALTITUDE NOT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHILE ATTEMPTING 180-DEGREE RIGHT TURN AT APPROX. 45 to 55 DEGREES OF BANK ANGLE...PILOT IN COMMAND INSUFFICIENT LIFT AVAILABLE TO COMPLETE THIS MANEUVER SAFELY.

I was honestly expecting this video to be a joke or a rickroll or something. For once I kind of wish it was.

Nut loose AND ASLEEP behind the yolk. Ronnie too... If he wasn't, he'd be kickin an screamin a hole in the floor-tryin to Fred Flintstone them outta there. THIS, armchair quarterbacks, is ALL and that's that. NOTICE THE COCKPIT AUDIO: Snoring and classic sleep apnea. Dickhead didn't have time to key mike... Are you really thinking Ronnie didn't have a headset on???

the description says 2 fatalities - unfortunately. Plane was climbing but plane to ground distance was decreasing because of the mountainous region. Pilot made an improper 180 turn resulting in engine stall. Wreckage found 3 years later along with 2 only and deceased passengers. Hard to watch.

Hatchet?

i can be a better pilot

For all of you armchair experts. The man screwed up and paid the ultimate price. I hope he and his passengers were saved by Christ.

what makes you say that

Fake

I rather nose stall the bitch into that field to the left than try a 180 degree while nose downing the plane to pick up speed.

I really don't get how this could happen. When flying in high terrain you are supposed to plan ahead and look where you are going (well, you should do that the whole time actually). Dumb crash if you ask me.

He did turn right. The stall occurred well after he was established in the right turn. My question was why he chose to turn right, instead of left or go straight ahead, rather than turn right into higher terrain completely covered in trees. I've been flying all my life, and this is a classic case of very poor decision making.

...perhaps he didn´t turn right.... when the plane has a stall (even if it´s a small stall) then it´s possible that the plane "falls over" the right wing because of too less lift and it only looks like the pilot steers to the right. greetings.

Between 22 seconds and 32 seconds, you can see a relatively large area clear of trees below and directly ahead, and it looks like also off to the left. What I don't understand was why he elected to turn right, toward a heavily wooded area and what seems like higher terrain, too, rather than push the nose down to get a little speed and turn left. I learned to fly in the mountains, and it's not difficult, but you have to plan ahead. This is pilot error, and it started before he even took off.

I didn't read the NTSB report, so I don't know the wind direction in relation to the airplane's position in that mountainous area. It is obvious in the video that they are flying toward the mountain, so if they were downwind, they could easily have flown into descending air that would exceed the ability of the L-19 to even maintain altitude, let alone climb, which at 13K density altitude is pretty much the limit of that plane's performance, especially with two guys onboard.

This is really sad. These guys were probably going on a camping or fishing trip and this is what happened. It just goes to show that a mistake in an airplane is not forgiving, and all it takes is one mistake to end your life. This should be a lesson to all pilots to keep our guard up and stay up high...

damaged analog tapes look like that

:'''''(

idiot!!

The pilot should have reduced the aoa as soon as he heares the stall warning. But he didn't - he tries to lift the nose when the trees are getting close which is probably the mistake that lead to the crash. I think he could have even recoverd the second stall (second stall-warning) if he'd given the airplane the needed time to recover properly. If you're flying with that high bank-angle make sure that your airspeed is high enough even in the thinner air!

They had potato cameras back then?

there were 2 fatals!!

can i call you Ronnie??

I do mean attitude. It's the angle at which you fly relative to a reference point, it being the horizon. I certainly don't consider myself being charles lindberg, but even less american thanks.

How Fatal?
